Michael was Director of New Media at Reuters and Managing Director of FT.com during the dot.com boom, pioneering the adoption of new media technology and distribution for these UK-based global media companies. While at Ft.com Michael saw that mobile phones were going to be transformational for new media. He created a start-up business building the world’s first interactive SMS marketing platform, working for companies such as Universal Records and Logica. Michael went on to form a successful online travel business in the UK.
In early 2023, in response to the takeover of Twitter by Elon Musk, Michael co-founded The Newsmast Foundation, a UK educational charity building infrastructure to support knowledge sharing and community building through social networking tools. Working with communities, content and technology over the last three years, the Foundation has put together a European technology stack, enabling any organisation to run their own social networking platform, centred on an easy-to-use mobile app. The Foundation’s Apps for Change programme is now rolling out pilots across the UK, Europe, Canada, Brazil, Africa and the US.
