Genoa Barrow is an award-winning journalist, serving as the Senior Staff Writer for the Sacramento Observer. A proud member of the ethnic press, Genoa produces in-depth articles on government and politics, health disparities and the fight for social justice. As a freelance writer and through partnerships with the National Newspaper Publisher's Association, California Black Media and Word In Black, Genoa’s work has also appeared in publications throughout the country. A veteran journalist of nearly three decades, she has been recognized by the Society of Professional Journalists-NorCal, the Betty Irene Moore School of Journalism at UC Davis, California Newspaper Publishers Association, National Newspaper Publishers Association, International Women of Color Day, and the Sacramento Chapter of the Black American Political Association of California. In acknowledgement of her 25th anniversary with The Observer, the City of Sacramento proclaimed July 20, 2024 as Genoa Barrow Day. Genoa is a four-time fellow with the USC Annenberg Center for Health JournalismIn addition to her journalistic endeavors, Genoa has published three books, “Daddy Issues: Black Women Speaking Truth & Healing Wounds,” which tackles the subject of absentee fathers and their impact on their daughters, “7X7 Kudos & Kwansabas/Something For My Sistahs” and “Hey Lil Sis,” her first children's book, about believing in one’s self.
